Sonographic Recognition of Multiple Cystic Encephalomalacia
Multiple cysts in both hemispheres were detected i n four children under I y e a r of
age by real-time s o n o g r a p h i c sector scanning. T h e s e cysts, t y p i c a l of multiplecystic
e n c e p h a l o m a l a c i a, followed v i r a l encephalitis i n t w o, bacterial meningitis i n o n e, a n d
bacterial m e n i n g i t i s superimposed on intracerebral hemorrhage in one. The d i a g n o s i s
of multiple c y s t i c e n c e p h a l o m a l a c i a, which has a g r a v e prognosis, is readily made with
high-resolution real-time sonography.
